Wales heroes set for Blues return

British and Irish Lions Sam Warburton and Gethin Jenkins are in-line for a return for Cardiff Blues’ derby European Rugby Challenge Cup quarter-final clash.

Wales prop Jenkins is training with the squad following a hamstring problem in the Six Nations win over Ireland three weeks ago. Wales’ record cap holder has been lending his defensive expertise during his recovery period. And caretaker coach Dale McIntosh is optimistic the veteran will scrum down against the Newport Gwent Dragons at Rodney Parade.

He said: “Gethin is fine and training really hard. He’s been helping out with the defence as well because we are down on coaches. He has really stepped up this week. He was disappointed to be injured and miss the last game. So I know he is really enthused to be back on the pitch.”

The Blues will also welcome back Wales captain Sam Warburton who was rested for the Guinness Pro12 trip to Ulster last weekend after starring in all-five of Wales’ Six Nations matches.

McIntosh added: “Sam is in a good place at the moment and long may that continue. He was contemplating coming back against Ulster but he needed to recharge the batteries and focus on this game.

“Everyone is expecting big things of Sam but he carries himself well and always leads by example and I am sure he will do the same on Saturday.”

However Wales centre Cory Allen and full-back Rhys Patchell have been ruled out.
The outside-half is undergoing concussion protocols following a collision with Ulster’s Nick Williams last week while Allen will see a shoulder specialist this week.

McIntosh said: “Cory has sprung a shoulder so he will be assessed throughout the week and having a scan. It’s unfortunate because he has started to have a spring in his step.”
