Caerphilly retain Wynne Lloyd Cup

Caerphilly fought off a stern challenge from Pembrokeshire to win the Wynne Lloyd Inter District Under 19 Final with a hard fought 7-3 victory at BT Sports Cardiff Arms Park on Tuesday.

It was the second season in succession that these two strong District sides had faced each other in the final.

Last season Caerphilly, predominantly selected then from the very successful Penallta Club, had run out convincing winners. However, this season it was a much closer affair.

DFP – Leaderboard

Caerphilly District widened their selection policy to include players from six Clubs, although the core of the team remained from Penallta Youth. Pembrokeshire Youth were also selected from six clubs with players from the strong Crymych Youth team being the fulcrum of the West Wales side.

After a bright start from both teams blighted to some extent by handling errors, Caerphilly set camp in the Pembrokeshire 22 meter area.

With their big pack providing plenty of ball Caerphilly took the lead after a quarter of an hour when scrum half and captain Mathew Flannagan powered over from short range. The try was converted by centre Lewis Alexander.

Playing against the wind Pembrokeshire took the match to their opponents. With No.8 and captain Sam Dolling to the fore, Pembrokeshire put Caerphilly under pressure. A succession of errors, including indiscipline that led to a string of penalties and culminated in a yellow card for second row Gethin Thomas for a late tackle, reduced that pressure but Pembrokeshire did get on the score board during this period when enterprising outside half Ollie Hughes kicked a penalty to leave Caerphilly 7-3 ahead at the break.

That is how the score stayed despite the considerable efforts of the much improved Pembrokeshire team. Whilst they dominated the match in the second half in terms of possession and territory they were unable to break down a well organised and very determined Caerphilly defence.

At full time it was Caerphilly that celebrated victory and the Cup was presented to scrum half Flannagan by WRU Board Director Gordon Eynon.
