RGC make most of Pooler defeat

RGC 1404 were able to leapfrog Pontypool and move into third place in the SWALEC Championship thanks to their 37-6 home win over Cardiff Met.

There were six tries in all for the home side, with Huw Grundy and Carwyn ap Myrddin getting two each, and James Lang helped himself to 12 points. The students could only muster two penalties from James Chilcott in reply.

Pontypool had high hopes of putting pressure on second placed Swansea, but never managed to get on top despite home advantage. Instead, the All Whites came out on top 17-8 to notch their 15th win of the league campaign.

Aled Jenkins and Tom Sloane crossed for the Swansea tries and Nicky Thomas kicked seven points. Nathan Brooks scored Pontypool’s only try and Tom Hancock added a penalty.

Meanwhile, Bargoed moved on relentlessly towards their first Championship title as they notched their 16th bonus point win of an unblemished season with a 33-22 win over Glynneath. There were five tries in all for the home side with Lee Pearson scoring three of them.

With eight games left to play Bargoed are now 15 points clear of Swansea and are on course to hit their target of 112 points.

At the other end of the table, Tondu moved off the bottom with a 36-29 win over Blackwood. They scored six tries in all to bag a valuable bonus point, Dean Fitzgerald and Nick Hopson getting two each. Blackwood went home with two points having scored four tries and finished within seven points.

Newbridge also picked up a bonus point in their narrow 29-26 win over Bridgend Athletic, while Merthyr had tries from Matt Trowbridge, Harry Millard, James Holmes and Tom Daley to thank for their 25-5 home win over Tata Steel.
