Wales gain revenge in Bournemouth

Wales Women’s Sevens side had to overcome tough conditions as well as tough opposition before coming away victorious from the Bournemouth Festival last weekend.

Rhys Edwards’ side gained revenge over Australian side Tribe 7s who defeated Wales in the final of the Amsterdam Sevens a week earlier, when winning the final 34-7 in emphatic fashion.

Wales head to this weekend’s Rugby Rocks tournament in Richmond in fine fettle as Edwards has one last chance to finalise his squad which takes part in the FIRA legs in Moscow and Brive which kicks off next week.

Wales began their Bournemouth campaign with a 31-0 rout over Pink Ba Bas with Sioned Harries, Laurie Harries, Rhiannon Parker, Philippa Tuttiett and Raf Taylor all on the score sheet.

Wales followed that with a 19-10 win over Wooden Spoon where Laurie Harries, Parker and Taylor added to their try tallies.

Wales finished day one with a comfortable 52-0 victory over Saxons with Taylor leading the way with a hat-trick. Laurie Harries, Parker, Nia Davies, Sian Williams and Elli Norkett also touched down.

Wales brushed aside Moody Cows 37-0 in the quarter-final with Taylor again leading the way with a brace of tries with Sioned Harries also bagging a couple with Laurie Harries, Parker and Nia Davies chipping in.

Sioned Harries continued her good form with another brace of tries in the semi-final against Wooden Spoon. Norkett and Laurie Harries added tries as Wales reached the final with a 26-12 victory.

Wales put the defeat to Tribe a week earlier behind them as they overturned that result with a comfortable 34-7 triumph where Laurie Harries, Tuttiett, Davies, Sioned  Harries, Norkett and Elinor Snowsill all raced over for tries.

Edwards was delighted with his team’s victory. “The conditions were testing to say the least so to come away with a tournament victory is very pleasing,” he said.

“The girls stayed focussed over the two days of action and it proved to be a real team effort. Sioned Harries was the player of the tournament but we had Rhiannon Parker who was also dominant while Raf Taylor impressed in attack as did Laurie Harries who also stood up well in defence.”

Wales Sevens squad in Bournemouth:
Laurie Harries, Rhiannon Parker, Ffion Bowen, Raf Taylor, Elinor Snowsill, Philippa Tuttiett, Elli Norkett, Sioned Harries, Nia Davies, Sian Williams, Chantelle Miller, Carys Phillips.
