The full-back racked up a staggering 114-points during the triumphant British & Irish Lions tour of Australia and was named Man of the Series.

It capped a remarkable season for the Cardiff Blues ace who also kicked Wales to RBS 6 Nations glory to win the Player of the Championship title

And Lions tour manager Irvine reckons Halfpenny deserves to complete a historic hat-trick of awards at the ceremony in November.

“Leigh Halfpenny was just unbelievable in Australia,” said Irvine.

“Those accolades would be well deserved.

“To go on a tour of that magnitude and produce almost flawless performances was just remarkable.

“What amazes me is that he is not a big bloke but for his size he does not miss any tackles. I don’t know if I have ever seen him make a mistake.

“His work-rate is just unbelievable. It’s not what you just do in attack it is what you do in defence as well.

“He was phenomenal and gives the boys around him so much confidence.”

And Irvine, who went on three Lions tours as a full-back, reckons Halfpenny can help Wales launch a real challenge for glory at the 2015 World Cup.

“There is no doubt if you look at the formbook, Wales are serious World Cup contenders,” added Irvine.

“There will be four or five teams in the mix and Wales will be one of the strong favourites.

“If you look at the last tournament in New Zealand, they were unlucky.

“It will be tough because the All Blacks are always going to be a difficult act, South Africa will peak at the right time and you can’t write off England on their home patch.

“When you have a huge portion of a Lions Test side from one country, and some great strength in reserve, then Wales are going to challenge the southern hemisphere sides.

“They are going to be very tough to beat in the Six Nations and it is looking good for the World Cup.

“The main challenge will be to keep that team together because you have players like Adam Jones and Mike Phillips who are in the autumn of their careers.

“Adam had a phenomenal Lions tour and he was a rock in that scrum, while Mike was a revelation and a great influence on and off the field.

“But they are great pros and look after their bodies and all the Welsh boys on tour were exceptional.

“I have been on five tours now and never been with a set of guys who are so dedicated and professional and they were tremendous ambassadors.

“The personality of the guys was brilliant and they were tremendous role models.”
