Blues can fill Roberts void

Cardiff Blues remain confident they can fill the void left by departing Wales centre Jamie Roberts.

The three-time RBS 6 Nations winner played his last game at the Arms Park on Saturday and signed off in style with a late try against Zebre ahead of his move to France.

Roberts will undoubtedly be a loss to the capital city region but director of rugby Phil Davies insists the Blues have the talent to fill his sizeable boots – pinpointing former Wales Under-20 star Owen Williams and current incumbent Cory Allen.

“Jamie’s loss is disappointing but it will give others an opportunity here to fill the void,” said Davies.

“Opportunities open up for other and that is professional sport.

“Cory Allen and Owen Williams are two young centres who have huge futures in the game.

“Along with Dafydd Hewitt and Gavin Evans, we also have experience to play alongside them.”

Allen, who starred during Wales Under 20’s Junior World Championship in South Africa last year has continued his impressive form in both the 15-man and seven-man codes of the game.

The 20-year-old was an integral part of Danny Wilson’s Six Nations squad and he has since become one of the shining lights in Paul John’s Sevens team.

Williams has featured more for the region but has found himself predominantly on the wing.

But Davies sees the Aberdare-product’s future in the midfield and he reckons he could even be a dark horse for Wales’ summer tour of Japan.

“We see Owen as a 13 in the future and he has played well for us this season,” added Davies.

“It is a case of needs must for us this season but playing on the wing has been a good experience for him.

“He came in at 13 against Toulon with only half an hours notice and did exceptionally well.

“I would have thought he would be in with a shout of the Japan tour.”
