Wilson looks to build squad

Danny Wilson says building strength in depth in the Wales Under 20 squad is vital if they are to have success at the next Junior World Championship.

Wales have won both of their Six Nations games so far but despite impressive victories over Ireland and France, Wilson has made five changes for Friday’s clash with Italy.

Llandovery’s Aaron Warren starts on the wing with Jordan Williams coming in at full back for Dion Jones. Centre Thomas Pascoe and forwards Gareth Thomas and Ethan Lewis also get their first starts of the tournament.

“We need to get players used to international rugby so that when the Junior World Championship comes up, we know what depth we’ve got,” said Wilson.

“These changes are in no way gambles. They’re good players, have been playing well and I’m sure they’ll take their chance with both hands.

“The depth of the squad is the most important thing. Jordan has played some great rugby for the Scarlets while Gareth was part of the last squad. Nicky Smith has gone well in the last two games but Gareth gets a chance as he’s now fit.”

The classy 13-27 win away to France means Wales top the Six Nations table with two games played. The win was far from straightforward though as France fought back in the second half and Wilson is expecting more of the same in Italy on Friday night.

Ellis Jenkins again leads the side with Rhodri Williams and Sam Davies continuing at half back.

“The important thing was to come away with a win, we knew we’d come under pressure and the same will happen on Friday,” Wilson added.

“Italy have got a big pack of forwards and play in a similar way to their senior side.

“They didn’t travel well to Scotland but they’re a passionate bunch on their own ground so we know we’re going to a tough venue to play a good side.

“When we played Italy last year we won with an interception try in the last minute of the game so we’re under no illusions as to what we’re up against.”
