Phil Davies believes Cardiff Blues’ Boxing Day victory over Newport Gwent Dragons has paved the way for a turnaround in form in the New Year.

Teenager Rhys Patchell kicked four penalties that proved enough to sink local rivals the Dragons at the Arms Park yesterday.

That victory was only the third in the previous 14 games for the Blues but director of rugby Davies is convinced the character his players showed in defence augers well for the future.

“It was important we finished the year on a positive footing and it gives us some momentum from which to push forward,” said Davies.

“It has been a difficult last six months where so much has changed both on and off the field. But this result shows that we are heading in the right direction.

“This result was all about the players. We’ve probably played better than that and not got the result but they dug in and our defence was outstanding.”

For the second game in a row, 19-year-old outside-half Patchell kicked all the Blues’ points, despite monsoon conditions, as he continues to emerge as one of the rising stars in Welsh rugby.

“He’s a talented lad and he kicked really well again for us,” added Davies.

“The conditions were not easy for kickers but he was decisive and strong.”

Having faced the Scarlets and Dragons in quick succession over the festive season, the Blues now have a mini break until facing Munster on Saturday, January 5.
