Rees aims to finish on a high

Matthew Rees believes Saturday’s meeting with Australia is the perfect opportunity to put the smiles back on the faces of the Welsh public.

Wales have had a difficult time so far in the Dove Men Series with losses to Argentina, Samoa and New Zealand coming on the back of a 3-0 series defeat to Australia over the summer.

But after an improved second half showing against the All Blacks last weekend, Wales are going into tomorrow’s clash in a positive frame of mind.

“We’ve got an opportunity now to put it write and what better way to do it then back in the Millennium Stadium,” said Rees.

“We’ve got to take the positives out of last week and make sure we start well, that’s key for Saturday. If we can do that, it’s about playing in the right areas, that’s probably one of the things we’ve fallen short of in the last few games.”

This summer’s 3-0 defeat in Australia saw Wales push the Wallabies close in all three Tests. And Rees believes the experience has made Wales a stronger outfit.

“We’re a bit more streetwise now especially after the experience of the summer tour,” added the Scarlets hooker.

“We came away from the summer tour frustrated with ourselves losing 3-0.

“The boys have been working hard this campaign and we’ve taken a lot of flak but it’s important we finish off on a high and get a win on Saturday.”

Rees packs down between Gethin Jenkins and Scott Andrews in tomorrow’s game and he has praised the impact the Cardiff Blues prop had against New Zealand last week.

“Scott’s been playing well for the Blues and he has a start this week and is relishing the chance,” said Rees.

“As one door closes another opens and Scott’s got an opportunity this Saturday. He’s proven he can play at international level and I’m sure he’ll play well on Saturday.”
