The Scarlets are sweating on the fitness of several key players ahead of their Heineken Cup clash with reigning champions Leinster on Saturday.

Simon Easterby’s men crashed to a heavy defeat at the hands of Clermont Auvergne on the weekend and their woes were compounded by a long casualty list. Aaron Shingler, Rob McCusker, Scott Williams, Jonathan Davies and Liam Williams all suffered injuries in the loss.

Easterby insists the outlook as far more positive than straight after the match in France but he admits the Scarlets will be playing a waiting game on half a dozen players.

“No one is ruled out at the moment. We have got a number of people who have picked up bumps over the weekend and a few came back to training on Monday whereas a few came back today,” said Easterby.

“There are a couple of doubts and you could see who walked off the pitch against Clermont. We have seven or eight players who we are looking at but we are very surprised about how many people were more positive when we returned to training.

“Jonathan Davies is one of the seven or eight players we are looking to make a decision on and we are not ruling him out.

“We will give the players until Thursday. There is lots of positivity around and hopefully that will rub off on the players who are trying to get to the game on Saturday.”

The Scarlets will also be waiting for the outcome of Morgan Stoddart’s disciplinary hearing in Dublin on Wednesday.

Stoddart, who was making his first start since fracturing his leg playing for Wales 14 months ago, picked up two yellow cards – for technical offences – at Stade Marcel Michelin and was dismissed on 37 minutes.

“There is a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday night and we will present a case to defend him and we will try to prove that the red card was sufficient punishment,” added Easterby.
