Blues receive double boost for Toulon

Cardiff Blues have received a double injury boost with the news that both Jamie Roberts and Sam Warburton are set to face Toulon on Sunday.

Warburton lasted just six minutes of the Blues’ opening Heineken Cup defeat to Sale after dislocating his finger, whilst Roberts received treatment for a chest injury.

But Blues boss Phil Davies announced that the Grand Slam duo have returned to training and are feeling positive as they look toward the must-win encounter at the Arms Park.

“It looks like they’ll both be fit for the weekend. There’s another few days to go yet but it looks like it,” said Davies.

“If they can train again tomorrow like they did today they’ll be pretty good.

“Jamie was a bit more sore yesterday than what he was after the game.

“He trained today which is a great boost, we didn’t think he would be able to. He didn’t do any contact but he looked pretty comfortable”.

After tweeting a picture of his injury after Sunday’s game in Salford, it seemed Warburton would need further treatment given the misshapen appearance of his finger.

But the Wales captain announced on Monday that no surgery would be required and Davies has confirmed that the injury is not as bad as first feared.

“Sam’s finger is not quite as bad as mine so he’s alright, he trained,” joked Davies.

The Blues are aiming to take maximum points on Sunday to keep their Heineken Cup hopes alive after throwing away a 12-point lead going into the break against the Sharks in Round 1.

“We played particularly well for 50-55 minutes, everybody saw that, and then for the last 15-20 minutes it was extremely frustrating and disappointing and we didn’t get the result we wanted,” added the former Leeds and Scarlets supremo.

Toulon will prove formidable opponents but the Blues won’t be short on belief having beaten their big-spending rivals 28-21 in the 2009/10 Amlin Challenge Cup Final – a match which both Roberts and Warburton played a part in, with the former scoring the opening try for the Blues.
