Scarlets even prouder of Warriors win

Scarlets assistant coach Mark Jones says Friday’s win over Glasgow was more satisfying than their opening-day thrashing of Leinster.

The Scarlets put seven tries past the Heineken Cup holders as they started their season in style yet Jones believes the 18-13 success at Scotstoun says more about his side’s chances of success this term.

Jones saw the team he represented with distinction cross the Glasgow line three times and hold out when the Warriors edged their way back into the game in the closing stages.

And it’s that clinical edge and mental toughness that has particularly impressed the ex Wales wing as the Scarlets prepare to face Connacht in Galway on Saturday afternoon.

“We’ve had a tough start to the season,” said Jones.

“Leinster rested a few internationals but that’s not to say they don’t have a strong second team. It was a good win for us and a good confidence booster.

“But the win over Glasgow was a bit of a better indicator of where we are. They were a good side but we did a very good defensive job and played with the ball in the right areas. It was the kind of game we might have lost in the past.

“Taking opportunities is something the boys have done pretty well, particularly in the back-three who have started the season very well.

“Andy Fenby was scoring in pre-season and has carried that on and George North has come off a great season and kicked on.

“We haven’t won in Connacht for a long time, though, and we’re not expecting to win. We’re expecting the boys to perform to the same level they have in the first two weeks – if they do that, we will have a good chance.”
