Feast of weekend rugby

With the start of the season just a week away, this weekend sees both professional and amateur clubs across Wales gear up for the new campaign with a feast of rugby on offer across the country.

Arguably the weekend’s highlight sees an Adam Jones XV take on Neath at The Gnoll tonight (KO 7.45pm) as part of the Welsh prop’s testimonial year.

A host of former stars are set to feature in tonight’s fixture which as well as raising money for charity, provides a valuable warm up for Principality Premiership side Neath as their only pre-season fixture ahead of this season’s league kick-off.

While a good crowd is expected at The Gnoll, at the same time Cardiff Blues will finalise their preparations for their RaboDirect PRO12 opener away to Connacht Rugby next Saturday.

Phil Davies welcomes back a host of internationals as his side take on Bath at the Rec tonight with Wales captain Sam Warburton and teammates Leigh Halfpenny, Alex Cuthbert and Bradley Davies all starting.

In a curtain raiser to the game, Premiership side Llandovery take on Bath United. (KO 5.30pm)

While the Blues are in action, the Ospreys, Scarlets and Dragons take a rest ahead of their respective RaboDirect PRO12 openers next weekend.

Elsewhere, while local clubs across Wales prepare for the start of the season, Crynant RFC are hosting a family fun day on Saturday with the prospect of a Guinness World Record being broken in the process.

As part of the WRU’s Join the Beat campaign, the club is calling on as many members of the local community as possible to get involved in beating the current world record of 279 consecutive passes of a rugby ball.

Taking place at Woodland Parks playing fields from midday, the world record attempt will be followed by a family fun day.

The event is being held with the aim of engaging members of the local community in their local rugby club so if you are in the area head down to be a part of a world record attempt.

In a fitting end to a weekend feast of rugby, the inaugural Colin Hillman Sevens takes place on Sunday at the South Wales Police Rugby Ground in Waterton Cross, Bridgend with 10 teams competing.

Former Wales Sevens coach Hillman died in 2009 with the tournament, a brainchild of Colin’s friends and colleagues, taking place in his memory.

The rugby competition takes place alongside a hog roast and BBQ with an outside licensed bar. There will also be children’s rides, stalls and a raffle on the day.

As well as playing for a number of Welsh clubs, Hillman also played for the Barbarians and Wales Sevens as his name became heavily associated with sevens both in a playing, coaching and managing role.

With many other rugby tournaments and events also taking place this weekend,  make the most of the Bank Holiday weekend by heading down to see a game, attend an event or support your local club in whatever way possible.
