Jones calls on Wales to secure deserved victory

Ryan Jones admits Wales’ agonising loss to Australia was a bitter pill to swallow but has called on his colleagues to claim the victory they deserve.

Wallaby super-sub Mike Harris slotted an injury-time winner to break Welsh hearts in Melbourne last Saturday.

Rob Howley’s men will lock horns with Australia again in the third and final Test in four day’s time, targetting a first win over the Wallabies on their home patch since 1969.

And Jones has urged his team-mates to dig deep to claim the elusive Wallaby scalp.

“To lose to the last kick of the game was a real kick in the teeth,” said Jones. “The boys had put their bodies on the line and it was bitterly disappointing to come off second best.

“But that’s sport. You live and die by those decisions and those moments. That’s why it’s exciting and why people come to watch. They are the margins in Test rugby.

“But one thing this team has done over recent months is dug deep for each other and we are certainly going to do that now.

“We will take it on the chin and we’ve got to bounce back. We are a team that learns from mistakes and decisions and we are going to keep fighting.

“We are very proud to pull on that Welsh jersey and I think we’ve shown that. To a man, we’ll go out this week and make sure we are mentally and physically ready.

“As far as we are concerned, it’s another one-off Test match and we will go and try and get the result there, a result this team deserves and one we can go home proud of.”

The Ospreys veteran, who has been rejuvenated in recent months, insists Wales can improve on their performance in Melbourne.

The 65-times capped stalwart has pinpointed the need to retain possession and urged his team-mates to stay disciplined.

“We’ve gone large parts of the game last weekend without the ball, which is a very difficult thing to do against a side of the quality of Australia,” added Jones.

“We need to try and get a bit more ball and play more in the right areas and with some discipline too and hopefully that result will come.”
