Davies shines in RGC 1404 defeat

A second half revival wasn’t enough as RGC 1404 ultimately left themselves too much to do with a Georgia International XV winning 25-17 at Eirias on Saturday.

On a perfect evening for running rugby, Georgia led 22-7 at halftime but the home side stormed back in the second spell to keep the international side try-less.

Captain Kelvin Davies was a stand out performer for the North Walians as RGC 1404 played out of their skins to hit back with a try by Ben Stelmaszek. But after heroically hauling themselves to within five points of the visitors, Georgia ensured their second victory of the week in Wales when Saba Nikolava banged over a late penalty.

Despite the defeat, RGC 1404 Head Coach Chris Horsman was beaming with pride with his team’s performance.
“It’s a measure of where we are as a team that we are disappointed we didn’t beat the Georgians. We pushed them hard and it shows how far we have come, and no one can say North Wales isn’t for rugby after this performance,” he said.

“In the first half we didn’t execute the game plan but in the second half we executed and we dominated. With an average age of 21 for the squad, the future looks good for us.

“If someone had told me six months ago when I only had six players that we would run a Georgian team close I would have said you are mad.

“I’m proud of every player but it’s difficult not to single out Kelvin Davies with his performance. He represents what we are all about. He’s a North Wales lad who plays his rugby locally and we want more kids to say we want to be the next Kelvin Davies and when we are in the league hopefully we can spend more time to train and grow the future Kelvins.”

Georgia opened the scoring with a penalty under the posts by Nikolava but the opening try went to RGC 1404 after after Stelmaszek showed quick feet and a turn of pace leaving the Georgian defence bemused to run in for a brilliant try. Carlton Jones added the conversion.

For the opening 15 minutes everything was played in the Georgian’s half with Davies involved in everything for RGC 1404 as they looked to make their domination count.

Georgia fly half Kacharava spotted a gap to run in under the posts for a converted try with the visitors extending their lead with tries by prop Levan Chilachava and winger Gegenava.

After the break Jones reduced the arrears with a well struck penalty before RGC 1404 scored a well deserved try.
A quick tap from sub scrum half Bryn Phillips set up Stelmaszek to dive over in the corner. Carwyn Ap Myrrdin hit a brilliant conversion from the touchline to bring his side within five points but Georgia were awarded a penalty practically straight from the restart to clinch three further points via the boot of Nikolava to give the international side victory.
