Rees heroics prove in vain

Despite Rachel Rees scoring 26 points for the Ospreys she was still on the receiving end of a 69-31 defeat to the Blues on the Ynys at Aberdare in the Girls Regional U18s Championship last Sunday.

Rees crossed over the line four times and converted three but despite her personal heroics the Blues ran out comfortable winners in the end.

The Ospreys were always going to have a mammoth task with only 12 players turning up. The match started off slowly, but in the ninth minute the Blues No 8 Jenny Collins found space and made her run for the Ospreys line to score her first try of the match, converted by Joanne Jones.

Both teams fought well, however it was the Blues who exploited the gaps to their advantage and it was Collins who again found herself crossing the line for her second try, again converted by Jones.

With clever and disciplined forward play from the Blues, power house Bronnie Jones drove over for another try, converted by Jones.

A fatal error at the 20 minute mark saw the Ospreys steal the ball and it was outside centre Elli Norkett who made a run down the far side of the field to score the Ospreys first try.

The Blues soon realised that this was going to be a tough encounter and that no more mistakes would be allowed. The Blues worked well and scored another two well drilled tries both from wing Bethany Johns. However just short of the half time whistle Ospreys fly half Rachel Rees intercepted a pass and made a dash for the line with somewhat ease and style to leave the Ospreys trailing 33-12 at half time.

The Ospreys started the second half strongly with Rees scoring another try within two minutes and she seemed as if she was trying to lead her team singlehandedly to victory against the odds.

However the Blues forwards continued to impress as quick offloading gave Laura Orgill an open run to the line to score her first try of the match. Jones converted comfortably for a 40-17 lead.

The Ospreys refused to give in and they held their heads high but another disappointment came as Blues stand in scrum half Amberley Ruck found her feet to score a good try. The Blues then again managed to hold the ball and feed out yet again to Ruck for a well deserved try under the posts which she then converted.

Another try came the Blues way via Chloe Smith, however the Ospreys showed good commitment to bounce back with another try from Rees to cross over for her third of the day. Unfortunately for the Ospreys they conceded further tries from Orgill and Ruck.

A brilliant performance by Rees was capped in the dying seconds when she dipped into her box of tricks with a sublime chip and gather before sidestepping the last player to score her fourth try of the game. She then converted to top off a superb individual performance just at the final whistle.

The victory leaves the Blues well set for the Girls Regional U18s Championship with Gogledd Cymru standing in their way at their final game at Gwernyfed on Sunday 8th April, kick off 2.30.
