Wales will be looking to build on their haul of 10 points from last weekend’s event in Hong Kong when they play in the newest leg of the HSBC World Series this weekend in Japan.

The Japanese event is the seventh round of the series with Wales currently sitting in seventh place with 61 points.

Wales faced a daunting pool in Hong Kong where they had to face eventual tournament runners-up New Zealand, South Africa and USA.

Defeats to the Kiwis and South Africa and a victory over USA took Richie Pugh’s men through to the main knockout stages but new Zealand once again proved a stumbling block with a convincing 31-7 quarter-final win.

Samoa then ended Wales’ participation with a 36-7 victory in the Plate semi-final.

However the draw for the Japan Sevens in the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium has been slightly kinder with Argentina, Kenya and Russia to be Wales’ opponents.

The current 12 core teams – Argentina, Australia, England, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, USA and Wales – will play in Tokyo, along with four regional invitees – Portugal, who booked their ‘core’ team status in Hong Kong for the 2012/13 Series, Russia, Hong Kong and the hosts, Japan.

“We have a tough pool, it is going to be difficult,” explained Pugh.

“Russia, who will be hurting after last week in Hong Kong will be tough while Kenya always seem to do a job on us and then we have Argentina who have shown how they can defend and how they fight for the game. It is going to be a battle, but we are looking forward to it.”

Wales have made one change to their squad line-up, with Tom Habberfield returning to the side in place of Rhys Shellard.

Wales: Will Thomas, Harry Robinson, Lee Williams, Alex Walker, Tom Habberfield, Owen P Williams, Ifan Evans, Dan Fish, Craig Price, Richie Pugh, Adam Thomas, Richard Smith.
