High drama at North Road

In stormy conditions at North Road, Lampeter Ladies took on a larger Barry outfit with a second home win of the season being the ultimate aim.

Barry were the more experienced and streetwise of the two sides, as Lampeter again fielded three players who had never played a competitive game and ultimately this proved the difference as Barry secured a 17-0 victory.

In contrast Barry fielded experienced players who knew how to use the windy conditions to their advantage. The conditions allowed the large home crowd to be treated to both sides keeping the ball in hand and running the ball at every occasion, in the knowledge that throwing into lineouts were an almost impossible task.

With Lampeter making life difficult for themselves through needless handling errors, Barry were able to capitalise on field position and battered the home try line. The real plus side for Lampeter was their stern defence so early on in the game.

In the end however, the defence finally gave out to the Barry barrage as No 8 Katy Gravell crashed over from short range.

From the restart Lampeter tried to gain a foothold in Barry territory, but the visitors ran into the strong wind with Gravell again heavily involved in the attacking play.

Proceedings then came to a halt as Barry prop Hannah James suffered a horrific leg break in the tackle with referee Andrew Thomson stopping the game immediately.

For the second time this week the Air Ambulance was called into action to a match in Lampeter, in order to airlift the hard running prop to Morriston hospital. With play delayed for almost an hour it was always going to be difficult for both sides to refocus on the restart of the match and it was Barry who restarted the strongest.

In the end Lampeter conceded a penalty for hands in the ruck, only for Gravell to receive the quick tap to crash over through the home defence.

Again from the restart Lampeter were guilty of putting themselves under pressure. With quick ball spun wide Barry winger Lindsey Phillips scored out wide with centre Nicky Yapp adding the extras from the kicking tee.

Staring down the barrel, Lampeter regrouped to actually start playing with the ball in hand with neat inter-passing between forwards and backs putting the away side under some telling pressure.

The second half proved to be a busy affair for the man with the whistle as Lampeter came out firing on all cylinders combining tackling in defence and strong running from debutants Clare Ralphs and feisty full back Nicky Landsley.

With 10 minutes of the second half gone a flare up at a ruck saw three more players yellow carded. Two from Barry and one from Lampeter were sent to the sidelines to cool down, yet the game seemed likely to erupt at any moment as feelings ran high.

With 10 minutes left of the game an unsavoury incident marred further what had been an ill tempered second half as  replacement winger Dana Jones got caught very late off the ball by one of the  Barry centres, knocking Jones to the floor resulting in a nasty gash to both players heads.

With emotions running high Lampeter coach Brinley Smydde feared for the safety of his players and asked the ref to call proceedings to a premature end.

All in all, parts of the game saw excellent rugby from both sides yet sadly the match will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Both sides will do well to play to their strengths in future by keeping their discipline and play the rugby within the rules of the game to promote the game further to ladies in their respective towns who will be attracted to game.
