Wanderers Youth claim coveted cup

Glamorgan Wanderers Youth claimed the National Youth Cup by defeating Merthyr Youth by 16-6 in front of 1,000 spectators at the Millennium Stadium.

In a match,which exhibited the best qualities of Youth rugby, a powerful second half performance gained Glamorgan Wanderers Youth the prize of the coveted cup.

In the first half Merthyr Youth, with outside half Josh Lewis, and captain and No 8 Andrew Murphy to the fore, were the dominant team and established a 6-0 lead through two Lewis penalty goals.

Early in the second half Glamorgan Wanderers Youth took the initiative.

With their strong pack, well led by captain Joe Russell, gaining an ascendancy the Wanderers Youth scored an early try by scrum half J-B. Bruzulier. The splendid conversion by Diggy Bird gave the Ely-based team a lead which they did not surrender.

Two penalty goals from Bird and a drop goal in the last minute from full back Cory Allen secured the victory for the Wanderers.
