Gatland and his coaching team took charge of a full contact session on the second of the three day camp.

With WRU Group Chief Executive Roger Lewis an interested observer, the players went through their paces as they build up to the first of their four matches next month against the reigning world champions, South Africa.

The Prince William Cup clash between the Six Nations winners and the Webb Ellis Trophy holders on Saturday, 8 November, is one of three sell-out games at the Millennium Stadium and will be a vital game for Gatland and co.

Having lost his unbeaten record as coach of Wales to the Springboks in the two-Test series in the summer he is keen to gain revenge on home soil.

The game is also the first stepping stone for Ryan Jones and his players on the road to possible selection for the British & Irish Lions next summer in South Africa.

The Welsh players return to their Regions on Wednesday afternoon to turn their efforts to the final weekend of Pool matches in the EDF Energy Cup. Three of the four Regions are on course to top their Pools and potentially qualify for the semi-finals of a tournament won by the Ospreys last season.

The Welsh coaching team, meanwhile, will have half an eye on three of Wales’ other November opponents this weekend. Australia and New Zealand meet in a Bledisloe Cup match in Hong Kong on Saturday morning, while Canada face Portugal in Lisbon later in the day.

There are still tickets available for the Friday night clash with the Canadians. For tickets call 08705 582 582 or visit www.wru.co.uk/tickets.
