Ospreys slay the Dragons

James Hook kicked three penalties before Gavin Henson struck late on to finally shake off a stubborn Dragons outfit in torrential rain.

Ceri Sweeney landed two penalties, taking him past the three hundred points mark in the competition, to earn the Dragons a deserved bonus point but it was the Ospreys who sailed home winners in the downpour thanks to a man of the match display from Wales No.8 Ryan Jones. More than 8,000 spectators braved the downpour but neither side could muster a try in the wet and windy conditions.

Hook and Sweeney were both off target with their opening attempts at goal though the Ospreys centre came close to breaking the deadlock. His break sent wing Richard Mustoe clear before his kick found Lee Byrne, unmarked out wide, yet the Wales wing could not reach the ball before it skipped out of play.

Hook almost profited from a similar tactic by scrum half Jason Spice but Kevin Morgan was alert to the danger. The young Wales star put the Ospreys 9-3 ahead in the sixth minute of the second half when replacement Dragons prop Lee Harrison was shown the yellow card for a professional foul.

However, Sweeney narrowed the gap to 9-6 by the time he returned to the field and went close to sending Morgan over for a match winner with a clever kick. Gavin Henson managed to snuff out the danger and then landed a monster forty-five metre kick to settle the game for the Ospreys who had to survive a late rally by the Dragons before the final whistle.
