Konica Minolta Cup set for big kick-off

There will be 96 ties in the opening stage, with one of the 11 minnows assured of progress into the second round as Cardiff Medicals will host Aberystwyth University in the first round.

Bryncethin Sports, who spearhead the eight Welsh Districts clubs as their cup holders, are rewarded for their fine performance in last season’s Konica Minolta Cup, when they reached the third round before going down 22-8 to Caerphilly, with a home draw against ASDA Division Three West club Ammanford in the opening round.

Another WDRU outfit, Trefil, who knocked out Felinfoel before falling to Penclawdd in round two lat year, will fancy their chances against higher ranked opposition, this time in the shape of ASDA Division Four South West’s Ystalyfera.

Nant Conwy led the charge for North Wales last season as they stormed through to round five, dispatching Maesteg Quins, Hirwaun, Tylorstown and Rhydyfelin. along the way before finally falling 28-15 at Builth Wells. They will start afresh with a visit to Brecon from ASDA Division Three South East.

North Wales clubs have fared well in the draw with 12 being given home ties, leaving only six to travel. There will be two North Wales derby ties with Ruthin making the short trip to Colwyn Bay and Caernarfon visiting Welshpool.

Carmarthen Athletic may well have finished in fourth spot in ASDA Division Two West last season but they were knocked out of the cup at the first stage by Tonna. This season they will be hoping for a vast improvement when they travel to Llantwit Major, now in ASDA Division Four South West.

ASDA Division Two East side Llantwit Fardre went all the way to round three last season before losing 20-14 to UWIC. They start with a home clash with Nantyffyllon of ASDA Division Three South West.
