Elsewhere, the Blues guaranteed Heineken Cup rugby next season and kept alive their hopes of glory in this year’s competition with a 30-12 victory over Connacht at the Arms Park. Their sixth win in succession means they have now taken 27 out of a possible 30 league points and remain in third place in the table.

Round 19 of the Celtic League opened on Friday night with three games, including Heineken Cup finalists Munster’s convincing 41-25, five try victory over Border Reivers, that temporarily took them above the Blues into third place.

Also on Friday night, the Dragons got back to winning ways with a bonus point victory over Glasgow Warriors that kept up the Dragons challenge for a Heineken Cup place next season and saw captain Jason Forster adding to his impressive try tally with two touchdowns.

Friday’s third game saw the Scarlets succumb to their sixth away defeat at the hands of Edinburgh Gunners. The win brought an end to a run of four successive defeats for the hosts and kept them in touch with those sides leading the chase for the title.
