BRYNTEG CS WIN ROSSLYN PARK U13 TITLE

In Britain’s most prestigious schools sevens tournament, sponsored by the Wooden Spoon Society, the Bridgend school won eight games – four on the first day, four on the second day of competition – to beat some of the country’s top rugby playing schools on the way to the title. With two big forwards – Will Thomas and Ben Evans – adept at winning ball, breaking tackles and distributing wisely, Brynteg had a brilliant little general in fly half Ollie Olds whose vision and timing marked him out as a special talent.

Brynteg averaged over five tries a game throughout the most demanding of competitions, ending with a points for total of 265 with only 73 against.

On the first day there were wins over Bedford 35-7, St Benedict’s 33-0, RGS High Wycombe 29-17 and Cardiff’s Whitchurch HS 31-12, followed on the second day by wins over Edinburgh’s Merchiston Castle 36-14, Judd 39-14 and a very good Bradford GS 31-5, to get to the final.

Brynteg were out of the blocks fast in the final, tries from Will Thomas and a brace from Rhys Evans, twin brother of Ben Evans, putting them in command. St George’s rallied with two tries before Ben Evans and Huw Robinson scorched home for tries number four and five and a famous victory to confirm the school’s reputation as one of Wales’s great nurseries of the game.
