CUP FINAL PLACE – AND RAG DOLL – AT STAKE

These two famous rugby clubs first clashed on 19 October, 1896 and, since 1921, they have done battle for a one-off mascot, a Rag Doll presented by TR Mills, of the Salutation Hotel, Llanelli – then the club’s headquarters – to EF Simpkins, the Bath Chairman.

From then on during every encounter between the sides, the doll would appear – draped in the colours of the most recent victor – and hang from one of the goalposts. Many famous names have held the illustrious Rag Doll aloft, including Ieuan Evans, Phil Bennett, Scott Quinnell, Jeremy Guscott, Stuart Barnes and John Hall.

The Powergen Cup semi-final clash will see the mascot’s latest appearance which is enjoyed by fans and players alike. Ex-Scarlet star Scott Quinnell said: “The two clubs have had some fantastic encounters over the years and two things could always be relied on: the rag doll and a great open brand of rugby. And I’m sure it will be the same in the Millennium Stadium on Saturday. I can’t wait.”

* The Scarlets are the current holders by virtue of their 27-10 Heineken Cup quarter-final triumph at The Rec four years ago.

* This will be the 138th meeting between the clubs.

* The Scarlets lead 93-37 with seven drawn.
