WWRU STRATEGIC PLAN PUBLISHED
The plan comes following the release of the WRU Strategic Plan which calls for a full and extensive review and strategy for the women’s and girls’ game. The WWRU plan itself, reflects the WRU equivalent and shows a further integration between the two organisations.
The focus of the ground-breaking strategy, the first of it’s kind in Welsh Women’s rugby, is the need for an effective organisation to drive all levels of the game. This will be underpinned by an increased level of direct funding being injected into the game.
The community element clearly sets out the need for a sustainable structure driven by committed and enthusiastic volunteers, with the two main targets being an increase in participation and improvements in performances.
The importance of a successful elite level is recognised as a key catalyst to grass-roots development. Success provides role models, inspiration and motivation to younger players at both community level and the early stages of international representation. The need to raise standards and expectations in the high performance is paramount with a concentration of funding, resources and support playing a central role in this process.
Manager of Women’s and Girls Rugby, Jilly Holroyd, emphasised the significant impact the strategy will have on the game in the medium to long term “The production of the Strategic Plan is a fundamental step in the Welsh Women’s Rugby Union’s development as a modern, professionally-run organisation. We all now have a basis from which to work and long term targets to strive towards. However, this is only the start of the process and the document signifies the amount of work that needs to be done to reach the set targets of a successful and sustainable structure”.
