MILLENNIUM STADIUM TURNS PINK

Some of the country’s most outrageous Drag Queens will be joined by internationally renowned songstress and gay icon Nicki French, Abba Tribute band Bjorn Again and Red Hot Chilli Peppers tribute band Elguepo to celebrate the seventh annual Lesbian and Gay Cardiff Mardi Gras.

The theme of Cardiff Mardi Gras 2005 is to ‘Paint the Town Pink’ and the Millennium Stadium will join the Millennium Centre, the Civic Centre buildings and St David’s Hall, among others, in adorning itself with pink lights for the festival.

“The Mardi Gras is all in aid of a very good cause, part of wider strategy to combat hate crime and homophobia and is a registered charity,” said Millennium Stadium Business Development Manager Rupert Moon. “We wanted to do our bit to join in and what better way to do that than by doing what we do best, putting on a show!

“There’s no reason why the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff can’t rival the likes of Sydney and London as an iconic venue for the Mardi Gras.

“We want everyone to wear pink with pride at the event and join us for the culmination of an amazing day of celebration in the Welsh capital.”

The official Mardi Gras Concert begins at the Millennium Stadium at 7.30pm and has a late license until 12.30am, tickets cost £12.50 and are available from the Stadium shop and official website as well as the hotline number 08705 582 582. The concert follows Mardi Gras celebrations which take place in Cardiff throughout the day.

“The pink dragon will roar once again for the seventh annual Cardiff-Wales Lesbian and Gay Mardi Gras,” said Chairman of Mardi Gras Cardiff Rob Keetch – whose alter-ego, ‘Dr Bev, The Drag Queen’, will perform at the Millennium Stadium Concert. “More than 40,000 people are expected to join the celebrations this year and it promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

“That’s why we teamed up with the Millennium Stadium to put on the biggest ‘Pink’ concert the world has ever seen – even the spikes on the stadium roof will turn pink for this amazing night of celebration.”

The Mardi Gras itself gets under way at 1pm on Coopers Field, Cardiff. A rainbow of free events and entertainment will takes participants through to the grand finale which finishes in time for the Millennium Stadium Concert at 8pm.

Tickets, priced at £12.50, are available from the Millennium Stadium hotline tel: 08705 582 582, the stadium shop at 98 St Mary Street or by clicking here.
