WELSH PREMIERSHIP ROUND UP

WELSH PREMIERSHIP ROUND UP

The All Blacks won the title last Wednesday, but that didn’t stop Newport running in four tries in a 31-14 win, with fly-half Dan Griffiths scoring the opening try and finishing the match with 16 points.

The match of the round was at Stradey Park, where Llanelli held off a fast-finishing Aberavon to record a 35-32 victory. The home side led 35-20 after 80 minutes, but the Wizards ran in 12 points in injury time of the eight-try thriller. Aberavon fly-half Jamie Davies scored 17 points in a losing effort to go through the 200-point barrier this season.

Dragons centre Sione Tuipulotu went down a division to play for Pontypool against Bridgend, but his try wasn’t enough to stop a 22-12 defeat, while Cardiff steam-rolled Ebbw Vale 64-0 at the Arms Park.

Pontypridd warmed up for next weekend’s Konica Minolta Cup final with a 51-14 demolition of bottom-placed Newbridge, with lock Chris Martenko bagging a brace of tries for the winners.
