Under 19

Wales 37, Ireland 6
The Welsh boys warmed-up for their trip to the IRB Under 19 World Cup in Durban next month with a six try thumping of the Irish. This was the side’s fifth game ahead of their daunting opening challenge against New Zealand in South Africa and it was just the boost they needed. With victories over Scotland, Italy and Ireland, and defeats at the hands of England and France, the side will need to step up a gear on the world stage.

The Irish had been beaten 47-6 by England the previous weekend and conceded a first minute try to Cardiff wing Nick Gill. Two tries by hooker Ken Owens, of Carmathen Athletic, enabled Wales to lead 22-6 at the break. Outside half Gareth Williams-Davies converted two and kicked a penalty. After the break Owens completed his hat-trick and Neath Atheltic centre Jon Spratt and Carmarthen Quins flanker Stuart Phillips rounded off proceedings with a two try flourish in the closing stages.

All the Irish could muster were two penalties from full back Rob Kearney.
