HENSON SIGNS FOUR YEAR DEAL WITH OSPREYS

Henson, whose recent Six Nations performances have capitulated him into the rugby spotlight, said, “Its fantastic to be re-signing with the Ospreys. I never really wanted to consider any other Welsh side, let alone look outside of Wales, and its great to know I’ll be staying for the next four years of my career. I think the side has grown immeasurably over the past year and that’s been reflected in our performance. The Ospreys are now setting the pace in Welsh rugby, on and off the pitch, and becoming the model for others to follow – I’m just happy to continue playing my part in such a successful side.”

The deal, which was signed on the eve of Wales’ breathtaking triumph against France, is a massive boost for The Ospreys as they edge towards the Celtic League title. The 23-year-old centre had been the subject of much speculation about his future, with major English and French clubs known to be keeping a watchful eye on the contract proceedings. Nevertheless, The Ospreys management has always remained confident that he would sign a new contract and commit his future to the region.

The Ospreys’ Rugby Manager, Derwyn Jones, explains, “We’ve worked hard to create an environment which has helped Gavin to thrive as a player and his recent performances are proof of that. He’s an integral part of an extremely talented side that will be challenging for Europe’s top honours next season.”

“The Ospreys will continue to focus on our development structure and playing academy, ensuring that we continue to nurture more players like Gavin for the future,” he adds.

As The Ospreys’ joint-MD, Roger Blyth, points out, the move is also a great boost for the new Welsh regional rugby system, “It’s imperative that Wales keeps its top players in the country if it is to challenge for the top international and club honours. This is a great endorsement for regional rugby and The Ospreys in particular.”

Fellow joint-MD, Mike Cuddy, adds, “We are acutely aware that lifting our own performance means lifting the Welsh side too and we take this responsibility very seriously. The Ospreys are continuing to develop, in every sense, and each month our structures are getting stronger and our level of play is intensifying. The next year will be a critical period of consolidation for us, in terms of our squad, our ground and our commercial mechanisms. We’re delighted to be travelling in the right direction and delighted to have Gavin on-board.”
