It was the second stroke of luck in a short space of time for the Swansea Valley club, who won the right to have the RBS Six Nations trophy for a day last season.
But Thomas’ win is the biggest of them all as he scooped the jackpot in the latest monthly draw in the WRU Lottery.
“When I got the phone call to tell me that I had won I thought it was one of my mates pulling my leg. It was a huge surprise,” said Thomas. “As secretary of Pontarddulais RFC I have been aware of the good work done by the WRU Lottery over the past 10 years. It is great that the money raised is pumped back into grass roots rugby.
“I pay my Lottery subscriptions monthly by direct debit – and will certainly continue to do so after this win!”
WRU Lottery tickets are sold in books of six with each book costing £6.00. A club can expect to earn between 35% and 45% of the income from each ticket sold with the percentage increasing in accordance with ticket sales. Clubs can generate anything between £500 and £10,000 each year for their efforts and channel this money into the development of the club.
Since the launch of the WRU Lottery in 1994, the scheme has raised more than £500,000 for clubs and the development of rugby in Wales at grass roots level. Almost 20,500 tickets are entered into each monthly draw and at least 35% of the monthly income is put back into the game.
