30-year old Williams was awarded 24 caps between his debut against France in 1996 and his last appearance in a Welsh jersey in April 2002 against Scotland
It has been widely speculated that Williams would be selected for the Wales summer tour, but he this morning put an end to the speculation, whilst re-enforcing his commitment to the Neath-Swansea Ospreys
Williams has stated that he does not want a return to the life he previously had as an International rugby professional, citing that he wishes to maintain the time he is currently enjoying with his wife Diane, and his 20 month old son Logan
“I have a young family that is taking up more and more of my life, and I am sure other parents in my position would understand that I want to spend as much time as possible with them during this key stage in their lives,” said Williams.
“I am fully committed to ensuring that the Ospreys are successful in the Celtic League and on the European stage, but I want to strike the correct balance between rugby and home life. The level of commitment away from home required to train and play with Wales is higher than ever, and at this stage in my career, I simply do not want to spend that amount of time away from my family.
“Things are progressing well with the Ospreys, I am enjoying my role within the squad both as captain and as a senior player, and I do not want the distractions that playing international rugby inevitably brings.
“At the Ospreys we have a job to do over the next few weeks, but also a responsibility over the coming years to ensure this region delivers on its potential and becomes a force at European level”
Williams has however not closed the door on again representing the British Lions, saying: “Touring with the Lions in 1997 was a fantastic experience, and if the opportunity arose again I would jump at the chance. It was the highlight of my career and it would be an honour to play for them again. The Lions is a unique entity in world rugby and is special to everyone who has been fortunate enough to be involved”
Ospreys Regional Rugby Manager, Derwyn Jones was full of praise for Williams.
“Barry has been a great servant to Wales and his commitment to the Ospreys, initially as a player, and more recently as Captain is huge. He is an inspirational leader and the loss to Wales will undoubtedly be a benefit to the Ospreys.
” I can sympathise with Barry’s reasons for not wanting to give up his current home life, as I see at first hand the sacrifices Wales team members in the Ospreys squad make in order to represent their country. Barry is at the stage in his life and career where he does not want to give up the freedom and lifestyle he currently enjoys”
