Bennett Out To Get The Mullett

Rising star Huw Bennett is desperate to show the world he can live up to the hype by cutting “The Mullett” down to size when the Ospreys face Leinster on Saturday.

The promising 20-year-old hooker, who has already played more times for Wales than his club, takes on Irish campaigner Shane Byrne in the Celtic League clash.

And he knows it is time to deliver after making a name for himself as the youngest member of the Wales squad.

“People might know about Huw Bennett because I was at the World Cup but I don’t think many of them will know much about me on the pitch, that is where I want to be judged,” he said.

“People have spoken about potential and about the future but I’ve got plenty to prove so I just want to get out there and play rugby, that’s why I’m so excited about this game.”

Bennett was spotted by Hansen after playing a key role for the Grand Slam winning Wales Under-21 side earlier this year.

He was picked for the summer tour to Australia and New Zealand but won his first caps in the summer friendlies against Ireland and Scotland before appearing twice in the World Cup.

Yet he still has questions having over him having only TWICE played at senior club level.
“I think I’m getting a reputation that I will only play in red as I have played for Wales twice as many times as for the club,” said student Bennett.

“It’s strange but even last year I missed all the club games after a shoulder operation and then hamstring problem but was fit to play in every Wales Under-21 game.

“But I’m so desperate to get more club games under my of rugby that I will play for anyone, even my university team.”

Bennett will get his chance this weekend as the Ospreys welcome back their internationals including World Cup sensations Shane Williams and Jonathan Thomas.

“I live with Jon and at the moment I’m just walking around in his shadow, everywhere we go people are congratulating him and patting him on the back,” admitted Bennett.

“But even the response from the other players has surprised me. There’s such a good atmosphere that everyone is desperate to be in the team.”
