Race Is On For Tesco Tickets

More Welsh rugby stars are signing up for the great Tescos ticket rush.
After Kevin and Craig Morgan’s debut performance at the food giants Pontypridd store on Tuesday, their Celtic Warriors team mates Gethin Jenkins and Mefin Davies will be following in their footsteps today (Thursday).

The Welsh Rugby Union’s joint campaign with Tescos to sell tickets for the World Cup warm-up games against England, Romania and Scotland has already reaped rich rewards and more players will be making personal appearances at three stores in South Wales this week to further promote the big game.

After front row men Jenkins and Davies’ appearance in Pontypridd today (Thursday), Llanelli Scarlet and former Newport favourite Matthew Watkins and Gwent Dragon’s Hal Luscombe will be at the Newport Extra store at lunchtime on Friday. Gwent Dragons will also take the opportunity to come ‘together’ with the WRU and drive their own season ticket sales.

And next week a quartet of Ospreys will be flying into the Neath Abbey store to sign autographs and hand out prize draw posters.

“Our ticket campaign with Tescos has already produced a remarkable response in terms of heightening general awareness among the Welsh rugby public that tickets are available for these games,” said WRU commercial manager Gwyn Thomas.

“As well as generating some surprisingly good sales at the Pontypridd Tesco store, the WRU ticket hotline has been more active and sales through our ticket office in Cardiff have risen dramatically.

“More of our Clubs have been taking up allocations since Tuesday as they realise tickets are likely to be snapped up for these three vital matches.

“We are now very hopeful that all the tickets are going to go as the demand is definitely out there to watch and support Steve Hansen’s Welsh team. Now the race is really on, with every member of the public having an equal chance of buying tickets for friends and family.”

Ticket sales for the game against England at the Millennium Stadium on 23 August have topped 40,000, with 41,427 at close of play on Wednesday lunchtime, with tickets moving at the healthy rate of more than 500 a day.

“Due to the great response we had on our first day at Tesco in Pontypridd we have asked for more players to visit stores and join in the signing sessions. Kevin and Craig really enjoyed the experience and were able to take back to the Welsh squad some great messages of goodwill from the fans,” added Thomas.

“But the real measure of success will come once we get into the final few weeks before the games. Steve Hansen wants his team to play to full houses and that’s what we are trying to deliver with the help of the great Welsh public.”
