With Italy losing out to Portugal, Wales are in the top spot ahead of Sunday’s match against Italy and a victory over the hosts on Sunday in the final match would confirm Wales‘ place as the number one team.

Squad manager Roger Thomas said: “It is important to win but what is more important in this tournament is the development of players, some of whom have a good chance of making the FIRA squad next season and developing into promising players.

“Players that have particularly stood out so far are the two centres, Andrew Bishop from Treorchy and Chris Tossell from Kenfig Hill, along with the excellent lock Scott Marasco from the Newport Academy.

“There is also some hot competition for the number 1 choice as hooker between Ed Sherington of Newport High School and Gerwyn Price of Markham. The fact that the squad has been training and playing together has brought them on a great deal and the management has also learned a lot about the players too.”

Wales have also won the Four Nations tournament involving England, Scotland and Ireland in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002.
