The U21 Six Nations Grand Slam winning side beat No.8 seeds Argentina U21 24-18 to put one foot into the 2003 IRB U21 World Cup semi-finals setting up a mouthwatering clash against South Africa U21 at Newbury in the final pool match.

The fourth-seeds took an early lead with tries from in-form Cardiff fly half Nicky Robinson and Cardiff-bound winger Johnny Vaughton, but the diminutive Argentina U21 goal-kicker Alfredo Cordone slotted three penalty goals to ensure the young Welsh side led only 17-9 at the break.

Newport prop Rhys Thomas scored early in the second half, but Cordone’s fourth and fifth penalty goals narrowed the score to 24-15 to give the vocal Welsh fans some nervous moments in the closing stages.

Brave defence, that was a highlight of Wales U21’s opening win over Scotland U21, held firm once again and the young dragons held on for a vital win. Argentina U21 earned a bonus point with Cordone’s sixth penalty in the 85th minute.
