The Scarlets cemented fourth place in the Magners League after a hard-fought win over Edinburgh on Saturday afternoon.

Having been level on points with their Scottish opponents prior to kick off, Nigel Davies’ men moved three points clear of the visitors thanks to a 13-6 victory at Parc-y-Scarlets.

The hosts scored tries through Daniel Evans and Ken Owens as they opened up a 10-6 half-time lead over an Edinburgh side that had won the reverse fixture 32-13 back in September.

Both Scarlets tries came in the opening 15 minutes of the match, with wing Evans and hooker Ken Owens giving them the perfect start.

Martin Robert’s impressive break was the catalyst for the first score of the game, with centre Jon Davies then supplying Morgan Stoddart who made plenty of yards before supplying the scoring pass to Evans.

Roberts was again the inspiration behind the Scarlets’ second score, with Owens diving over after the newly-capped Wales scrum-half had been brought down just short.

Despite outscoring their opponents by two-tries to nil, the Scarlets missed an incredible six attempts at goal, as Rhys Priestland and Evans failed to get to grips with a blustery wind.

Edinburgh hit back through two David Blair penalties to leave the Scarlets with a four-point advantage at the interval, but the Scarlets never let their early lead slip from their grasp.

The second-half was a largely disappointing affair, with neither side getting on the scoreboard until the closing minutes.

When the first points of the half, and the last of the match, did finally arrive, it was the Scarlets who were celebrating. Evans was finally successful with a penalty that confirmed the home win, although it failed to prevent Edinburgh from leaving Llanelli with a losing bonus point.

On a worrying note for the Scarlets, Stoddart was carried from the field on a stretcher after appearing to damage his knee.
