Scarlets let victory slip through their hands

The Scarlets let Edinburgh back into a game they should have clinched and could only manage to leave Murrayfield with two points after a 20-20 draw.

The visitors were the dominant side in the first half and were 17-3 ahead at one stage with Edinburgh reduced to 14 men. A third try at that stage might have sealed the deal, but Liam Williams lost the ball over the line and the home defence grew in resilience.

It took the Scarlets a mere 44 seconds to notch their first points when Harry Robinson ran onto a Gareth Owen kick ahead to bag the first try of the night. Rhys Priestland added the conversion and then kicked a penalty.

Tom Heathcote got the Scottish side on the scoreboard with a penalty before a quickly taken tap penalty by scrum half Aled Davies paved the way for the supporting Williams to crash over for a second try which Priestland also converted.

At that stage there looked like being only one winner and Edinburgh, who had conceded nine tries against the Ospreys five days earlier, seemed set for another heavy defeat. But this time they didn’t drop their heads and instead created an overlap try for Tim Visser on the stroke of half-time.

Heathcote’s conversion made it 17-10 to the Scarlets at the break, but Priestland made the gap 10 points with a penalty when Edinburgh had a second player sent to the sin-bin. That was it, however, for the visiting side, who had acting skipper Scott Williams taken off in the second half with a leg injury, and the only remaining points came from the resurgent Scots.

Heathcote kicked a 51 metre penalty before replacement centre Phil Burleigh crashed over for a try that quickly followed the issuing of a yellow card to the Scarlets’ back row man John Barclay. That score gave Heathcote the chance to level the scores with the conversion and the outside half made no mistake.

There was just enough time for Edinburgh to get one last chance to snatch victory when the Scarlets conceded a penalty on half-way at a ruck. But with the last kick of the game Heathcote was well short and Priestland gladly kicked the ball out of play to confirm his side’s second draw in four league outings.
