Portugal 11 Wales 102

Wales became the first of the Five Nations teams to play a Rugby World Cup qualifying match, having failed to reach the quarter-finals in the 1991 tournament.

Wales set a Rugby World Cup record in this match – which was broken almost immediately by Italy’s 104-8 victory over the Czech Republic also for qualification – when they topped a century of points against Portugal.

Neil Jenkins’s 11 conversions was also a world record, but again it only lasted a day as Luigi Troiani topped it with 12 against the Czech Republic. Nigel Walker equalled the national record with four tries and there were 16 tries in all as Portugal were pulverised.
