Canada emerged triumphant over Fiji after a heavy downpour helped reduce the Pool C match to a dogged, error-ridden contest at Rodney Parade in Newport.

Despite the testing conditions, both teams did their best to play an expansive game. The Fijians, in particular, were intent on attacking in a manner most often seen in a Sevens game.

But with relatively little to choose between the two sides, it was Fiji’s ill-discipline that let them down at key moments.

Canada went into the interval with a 14-5 lead thanks to three penalties from captain and fullback Nathan Hirayama and a crucial try from flanker Keegan Selby, who pounced on an overthrown Fiji line-out close to their own line and plunged over for the score.

Fiji replied with a fine team try for lock Temo Vakaloloma, but though the islanders enjoyed other opportunities, they could not convert.

With both teams pressing for their first win of the tournament, the game tightened up after the break as the Canadians strove to keep Fiji pinned back in their own 22, daring them to run from deep.

The sun broke through as the second half progressed, improving the Fijian’s chances of moving the ball around, but too often they took the wrong option or committed a turnover to end a promising move.

As a result, Canada did not have to do too much to close out the game. Fijian ill-discipline got worse, with centre John Stewart red-carded for a dangerous tackle.

A penalty from Hirayama extended Canada’s lead, before a late Fiji try restored some pride for the islanders.

Hirayama’s boot was crucial on the day, his four penalties keeping Fiji at bay, although the Canada half backs Sean White and Matt Evans deserved praise for their composed game management.

Canada coach Tim Murdy said after his side’s victory: “I’m very proud of the guys, they showed a lot of resolve. We knew Fiji would be physical and they were. So, we tried some tactics to play to our strengths and keep away from theirs. We’ll have to lick our wounds after today as it was a physical one and prepare for who we play next.”

Whilst Fiji Coach Rayne Simpson commented on his side’s performance: “Very disappointing. We squandered a lot of opportunities, probably five tries, and in a competition like this, you can’t afford to do that. We panicked a little and rushed things and we needed to be patient. We’ll regroup and address the next game.”
