Having worked their way into a one point lead in the second half the visitors then allowed South African wing Tonderai Chavhanga too much space on the left wing and after skinning Harry Robinson he chipped over the full back, regathered and crossed for a match winning try in the corner.
The Dragons added the Blues’ scalp to that of the Ospreys, secured at home earlier in the season, and put a huge dent in their visitors hopes of reaching the semi-finals. The Blues remain in seventh place, two points off the Play-Off places.
The Dragons led 10-8 at the break thanks to a try from Jevon Groves which outside half Lewis Robling converted. Robling also added a penalty, while the Blues had a Tom James try and a single Dan Parks penalty to show for their efforts in the opening 40 minutes.
Parks had an off night with his boot and, after adding a second penalty, gave way to Ben Blair. It was the replacement full back’s wide angled penalty that gave the Blues the lead at 14-13.
But then came Chavhanga’s great burst and for only the second time since 2003 the Dragons beat their near neighbours.
