Blues topple Toulouse

Cardiff Blues stepped up their game to topple Toulouse with a 9-6 win to march into the semi-finals of the Heineken Cup.

It was sweet revenge for the boys in blue after suffering humiliation at the same stage against the same opposition last year.

Toulouse still had their familiar French swagger but this year they faced a more ferocious front five, a more dynamic three quarter line and an overall upgrading of performance from Dai Young’s team.

A crowd of 36,728 watched on as The Blues banished their demons and made their way into the final four and a meeting with either Leicester or Bath rugby in the first weekend in May.

Not once was the tryline breached in a typically tight Heineken knock out match with all the points coming from penalties.

The Blues snatched the initiative as early as the first minute when Ben Blair scored the first of his goals. Minutes later Frederik Michalak equalized and it looked as if discipline could settle this encounter.

The second half was 3-all on the scoreboard, but that does not tell the story of a half where Cardiff fought for every possession and Toulouse make telling mistakes at key moments.

Both teams hustled and harried but could not find a telling pass to breach the whitewash throughout a bruising battle that will give the Blues confidence ahead of their EDF Energy Cup final next weekend.
