Wales Sevens win Alex Cuthbert grabbed the first try of the game after only six minutes and then Tom James crossed at the end of the opening quarter. By half-time the Blues were 21-18 ahead thanks to three penalties and a conversion from outside half Gareth Davies.

All the Italian side’s points came from the boot of their international No 10 Warren Burton as he peppered the home posts with two drop goals and four penalties.

A yellow card for international back row man Manoa Vosawai just before the interval gave the Blues a numerical superiority they were able to turn into more points when Martyn Williams ran in his side’s third try. The bonus point was clinched right at the death when centre Dafydd Hewitt crossed with two minutes to spare.
