Cardiff Blues remain in charge of Pool Six after holding off Biarritz Olympique at the Arms Park. The French visitors out-scored Cardiff two tries to nil following efforts from Damien Traille and Julien Peyrelongue in either half.

But tournament top scorer Ben Blair kicked 15 points and two drop goals from Nick Robinson made sure Cardiff continued their unbeaten run.

Biarritz have lost their last four games in the French championship but they were first to strike at the Arms Park, after a scoreless opening quarter.

Traille missed with a long range penalty after three minutes but was on target to break the deadlock on 19 minutes after Biarritz capitalised on scrappy Cardiff play.

Takudzwa Ngwenya scooped up possession deep inside Blues territory after fly-half Robinson fumbled, full-back Ben Thiery provided the link for Traille to storm over.

Peyrelongue converted and added a penalty after Blair had got Cardiff off the mark but the Blues had Leigh Halfpenny to thank that the 10-3 lead was not more.

Biaritz fly-half Peyrelongue looked to have put Ngwenya through only for the American international to spill the ball over the line under Halfpenny’s tackle.

Instead a penalty from Blair and a Robinson drop goal brought Cardiff to within a point on the stroke of half-time.

That lifted the Blues and just three minutes into the second half they took the lead for the first time when Blair swept home his third penalty.

Robinson followed with a drop goal after Jason Spice should have put Andy Powell through, only to deliver his pass behind the No8 after a searing break.

But Biarritz again hit back through their influential fly-half when Peyrelongue scorched outside Tom Shanklin for Biarritz’s second try on 55 minutes.

His conversion nudged the French ahead only for Blair to extend his perfect display in front of goal, converting penalties on 59 and 75 minutes to steer Cardiff through.

However they were made to sweat in the final minutes when Robinson was charged down and then Maama Molitika was sin binned for punching.
