Wales will take lessons from Nelspruit heartbreak – McBryde

Robin McBryde reckons the lessons learned from Wales’ heartbreak in Nelspruit can help them end their southern hemisphere hoodoo against South Africa.

The Springboks visit the Millennium Stadium to take-on Warren Gatland’s men for the first time since the infamous second test of the summer tour, when South Africa snatched victory with a penalty try at the death.

Heyneke Meyer’s side overturned a 13 point deficit with 13 minutes left on the clock, and McBryde says his side will be better prepared for a Springbok comeback this time around.

He said: “We built up quite a healthy lead in that game and to lose it was hugely disappointing. We know they can come back if we get ahead, so all we can do is be prepared for it. We can take a lot of confidence and a lot of comfort from the fact we’ve been in those tight positions.

“We’re well aware of what it means to them to come to Cardiff and the atmosphere the stadium produces. It’s a place that every player enjoys coming to. We’re facing one of the best teams, at their best and it doesn’t make our work any easier.

“But we want to measure ourselves against the best in the build-up to the World Cup and South Africa are right up there.”

Wales have made three changes to their side to face South Africa on Saturday, with Gethin Jenkins, Scott Baldwin and Liam Williams all coming into the starting XV.

Jenkins and Baldwin will link up with Samson Lee to form the same front-row that started the clash against Fiji a fortnight ago.

The rest of the pack remains unchanged from last weekend’s game against the world champions New Zealand, with Jake Ball partnering Alun Wyn Jones in the second row and Dan Lydiate and Taulupe Faletau lining up alongside captain Sam Warburton.

Ospreys half-backs Rhys Webb and Dan Biggar continue their partnership as do the record breaking centre duo of Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies.

The only change in the back three sees Liam Williams come in for the injured George North. Alex Cuthbert and Leigh Halfpenny wear 14 and 15 respectively.

Meyer has made five changes to his starting XV with prop Tendai Mtawarira and hooker Bismarck du Plessis included.

Full-back Willie le Roux and wingers Cornal Hendricks and Lwazi Mvovo return to the Springboks side with JP Pietersen, Bryan Habana and Johan Goosen all back with their clubs.
