Tough trip for Scarlets

Scarlets’ head coach Simon Easterby believes Heineken Cup games against two of Europe’s finest teams will help to put a difficult few weeks behind them.

The West Wales side take on current European Champions Leinster on Saturday before welcoming Clermont Auvergne to Parc y Scarlets the following week.

Easterby knows his side face a big test of character as they travel to the RDS on Saturday night as he looks to put what has been a disappointing few weeks behind them.

Defeats to the Ospreys and Ulster have hit the Scarlets’ momentum and although their interest in the Heineken Cup has ended, Easterby says his side are firmly focused on getting back on track this weekend.

“We’re entering into two Heineken games one against the reigning champions, then next week against one of the top two or three sides in the competition,” he said.

“These games show us where we are as a group. Equally, they’re important in terms of making a mark to get us back on track for our season ahead. As coaches and players we respect this tournament, our supporters and what our region has achieved so we’ll only ever be going out in the next couple of weeks to try and win two games – that will never change.”

Easterby’s selection has been influenced by a growing injury list with just 11 backs available to him at the current time.

Ten of those make the match day squad with Liam Williams returning from concussion to start at full back.

The game with Leinster comes too soon for Wales wing George North following a neck injury sustained in the defeat to Ulster. His international teammate Jonathan Davies drops to the bench with Rob McCusker leading the side.

Easterby added: “Leinster will have some key players coming back from injury and have plenty of quality to draw on in their team which will add to their performance.

“While they will be disappointed with the Clermont loss, we know there’s a lot riding on this game for them but we feel exactly the same.

“Parity up front will be key and we have to be better at taking our opportunities. We need to put that right this weekend.”
