Australia show danger signs ahead of Under Armour Series

Australia served a warning to Wales ahead of their Under Armour Series clash with Warren Gatland’s side next month by sealing a remarkable comeback victory over Argentina.

Michael Cheika’s Wallabies will take on Wales at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Saturday, November 10 (kick-off 5.20pm).

And they showed all their class at the weekend to down the Pumas, overturning a huge 31-7 half-time deficit to triumph 45-34 in a thrilling encounter.

Cheika’s half-time team talk started the fightback as Australia scored six tries in total to come out on top.

“In the second half there was some sublime rugby,” Cheika said. “I won’t lie, it was unreal, but we don’t forget about the first 40 in any way, shape or form.

“We didn’t show our courage in the first half, but we showed it in the second. I just wanted to say what I felt at half time. I didn’t go down there with a plan or anything like that.

“We needed to get some personal meaning for our game because in the first half it wasn’t there. Once the lads got some meaning and some purpose, they played a heap better.

“I was obviously very unhappy with the first half and very happy with the second half, but happy doesn’t really make a difference at the end of the day.

“A few things didn’t go for us but we didn’t make anything of ourselves with our approach to the game, especially defensively. You’ve got to get up and make it happen.”

Argentina dominated the first period to score tries through Pablo Matera, Emiliano Boffelli, Matias Orlando and Santiago Gonzalez Iglesias in Salta.

But after the break all the hosts could manage was a penalty from Gonzalez Iglesias as Australia came back from the dead.

Cheika’s men have won their last 13 matches against Wales and this was more evidence of the danger within their ranks.

Tries from Michael Hooper, Izack Rodda, Israel Folau, a Dane Haylett-Petty double, and David Pocock turned the tables to ensure a thrilling victory.

Playmaker Bernard Foley ended the game with six conversions and a penalty.

Wales will face Scotland, Australia, Tonga and South Africa on consecutive Saturdays beginning on November 3.

South Africa will also provide a stern test having pushed New Zealand all the way in another Rugby
Championship thriller at Loftus Versfeld last weekend.

The Springboks – who had already beaten back-to-back world champions the All Blacks in the competition – looked like they’d come out on top.

But a late try from New Zealand flanker Ardie Savea and Richie Mo’unga’s conversioan sealed a 32-30 victory for Steve Hansen’s men.

Wales have had the better of South Africa in their last three matches including their historic meeting at Washington DC’s RFK Stadium in June.

The team Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus will bring to Cardiff will be very different to the one which featured in the American capital.

Erasmus’ big guns, who have impressed in the Rugby Championship, are all likely to be involved.

Jesse Kriel, Damian de Allende and Cheslin Kolbe scored their tries against New Zealand with Handre Pollard kicking three conversions and three penalties.
