As the big kick-off for Wales in the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand gets ever nearer, here are a few vital statistics ahead of the massive match against Scotland in Whangarei.

Wales have won 16 of their last 18 Test matches against Scotland (L2), including their most recent (24-19 in April); Wales also won their only previous encounter with Scotland at the Rugby World Cup (8-0 in 1994).

Wales are currently on a run of five straight Test defeats after winning four of their previous five (L1); Wales have scored just eight points or fewer in each match during that run and conceded 73 points in their most recent Test (7-73 v England in September 2022).

Wales have lost each of their last five opening fixtures at the Rugby World Cup, however, they have won seven of their last eight matches against European opposition at the tournament (L1).

Scotland are currently on a run of six straight Test defeats after winning five of six previously (L1), however, four of those defeats came by margins of just seven points or fewer.

Wales No 8 Sioned Harries already holds the Welsh World Cup record for the most tries (10) and needs four more points to overtake Tracy Comley (53) as her country’s highest scorer at the tournament 

Wales scored eight tries in the final 20 minutes of matches during this year’s Women’s Six Nations, England (15) were the only other side to score 5+ tries in the final quarter of their games during the Championship; Wales’ tally in the final quarter accounted for 67% of their total tries, the highest rate of any nation. 

Only England (2.8s) had a faster average attacking ruck speed than Scotland (3.3s) in this year’s Women’s Six Nations; on the other hand, Wales had the slowest average attacking ruck speed of any side in this year’s Championship (3.9s).

Scotland’s Evie Gallagher (54) and Wales’ Alisha Butchers (53) were two of just five players to make over 50 carries in this year’s Women’s Six Nations, while Gallagher also ranked in the top 10 for total running metres (309m).

Jasmine Joyce (Wales) made 316 metres over the gainline in the 2022 Women’s Six Nations, the most of any player in the campaign, overall, only Helena Rowland (445) carried for more metres than Joyce (426) during the Championship. 

Jade Konkel (Scotland) averaged 16 carries per game during the 2022 Women’s Six Nations, more than any other player in the Championship, while teammate Rhona Lloyd ranked second for total line breaks made during the tournament.

Kayleigh Powell gained 199 metres from kick returns during the 2022 Women’s Six Nations, more than any other player, while Scotland’s Chloe Rollie gained the second most (133); no Scotland player carried the ball for more metres overall than Rollie during the Championship (309, level with Evie Gallagher).
