George North revealed his delight as Wales ended their Under Armour Series with four straight wins.

Warren Gatland’s side followed victories over Scotland, Australia and Tonga by downing South Africa 20-11 at Principality Stadium. It extended their winning run to nine matches.

Tries from Tomas Francis and Liam Williams, two conversions from Gareth Anscombe, and two late penalties from Dan Biggar guided Wales home.

“I think it’s huge. The first ever clean sweep is not to be sniffed at. I think the boys are tremendously proud,” said giant wing North.

“It has taken a lot of hard work and hopefully we have done the country proud.

“We are all in this together – hard work is a given – and we enjoy each other’s company. We are in a good position in the sense we have more strength in depth now.

“We have got players pushing on in many positions and it is a fight to get your jersey every week.

“We have also had a lot of senior players coming back who weren’t on the summer tour and that is just driving the standard up even more.

“This has been one of the best campaigns I have been involved with. It has been a very honest and very hard camp. We are really trying to build something from within.”

Against South Africa, Wales conceded a second-half try to Jesse Kriel and Handre Pollard and Elton Jantjies kicked penalties for the Springboks.

But Wales were deserved winners as their defence – which was excellent all November – produced the goods once again.

“All the boys are good mates. We go toe-to-toe when the Guinness PRO14 derbies are on, but we go to shoulder-to-shoulder when the big games come,” North said.

“We know there is another level to go, there is more to come from us, but we can certainly be happy with how we’ve finished and there is certainly a good foundation to push on from.

“From a confidence point of view, that block-out before half-time was huge.

“I am sure Shaun Edwards will be bouncing for three or four days at least. It’s credit to the work he’s put in, the homework we all do, and again the boys buying into something we all believe in.

“We knew it was going to be a tough Test match, and we knew we had to be on our mettle from minute one.

“We’ve had four big, physical games, but there is a lot of rugby to be played between now and the Six Nations.

“A lot can happen between now and then, but we can finish this block in a positive mind-set and focus on the Six Nations when it comes.”
