Principality Stadium big screens will show a classic encounter from the illustrious history of international battles in Cardiff, from soon after Gates opening at 11.30am, and supporters are being asked to go online to pick which one:
Vote for the first win against South Africa in almost 100 years of trying, when Graham Henry’s Wales overcame their visitors by 29-19 in the opening game of the newly built stadium on 26th June 1999.
Or, the Mike Ruddock inspired 2005 Six Nations Grand Slam winning victory over Ireland, a 32-20 thriller which saw the first Welsh clean sweep in the competition for 27 years.
Choose Wales’ 30-3 demolition of England in 2013 under then head coach Rob Howley, when the home side not only prevented their visitor’s from achieving their own Grand Slam, but wrestled the title from their grasps too – a second consecutive Six Nations title for Wales.
Or, finally, pick Wales latest win over the Springboks – last year another Howley-led side finished their autumn campaign on a high, securing only their third win over South Africa in a 27-13 classic.
Gates open at 11.30am and, following suit from last weekend when 74,500 supporters heeded advice about newly enhanced security measures and headed to the stadium early, one classic game will be shown in its entirety as the perfect pre-match warm-up.
Warren Gatland’s Wales take on South Africa at 2.30pm, but Principality Stadium staff are once again advising fans to start their journey to their seats as early as possible.
“The early you get here, the quicker you will get in and we hope the draw of re-living one of Wales’ classic matches will be added incentive for supporters,” said Stadium manager Mark Williams.
“We cannot thank the fans enough for heeding our message about arriving early. We want fans to have the best and safest experience possible, but know that we can’t achieve that without their co-operation.
“The atmosphere was electric before the All Blacks game when the stadium was filled to its rafters.
“We need more of the same for the South Africa game, it’s an earlier kick-off and possibly a different audience, so we must guard against complacency.
“Showing the live Scotland game against Australia was well received last week and so, with no live game before our match against the Springboks, we hope the fans will enjoy a game from the vaults this week.”
Vote for the game you want to watch on the Principality Stadium big screens in the build up to Wales’ Prince William Cup clash with South Africa this weekend using the WRU’s online twitter poll or via the official Facebook page, both @welshrugbyunion – voting closes at 12 noon on Friday, when the winning game will be announced.
